Counterweighted Fixed Angle Easel

Necessity is really the mother of invention. I wanted an easel for my own use, and really wanted a Red Counterweighted H frame, but did not have the time to make one. I design all my easels in my sleep at 3am in the morning when occurred to me that what I could make in a hurry, was a counterweighted fixed angle easel. I then actually worked out most of the problems so that next day I dropped everything and made the easel on this page. I am very happy with it, it works a treat. It is counterweighted, at a fixed rear angle of 10 degrees and no castors. I had never seen or heard of a counterweighted fixed angle easel before I designed this.

Advantages over a counterweighted H frame.

Cost - it is a significant cost saving. It will be shipped fully assembled. Does not stick out in front.

Disadvantages over a counterweighted H frame.

Tilt angle is fixed to a rear slope of 10 degrees, it is not on castors and not so easy to move around the studio. It does however fold flat for storage and transport.

This is with the tray lowered, The tray will actually go to the ground, but here it is mounted at a higher location on the centre shaft.

The easel in this photo costs $690 including the tray, and is made of Victorian Ash.

Raised, raising and lowering the easel is by one finger, The rear counterweight balances all the weight. The tray simply slides up and down with the canvas attached.

I wanted it for this 3 foot deep canvas, if you look closely I have the outline of the painting on the canvas. The painting is of my daughter in law and is of the photo taped to the canvas

Work in progress. The painting is half finished, I have added a palette holder to my tray for the tubes of paint, the palette is on the tray, the wet brushes in a plastic bag, to stop them drying out.

Note the painting of our dog "Jessica" on the left FFHV easel, it is also half finished.
